Jesus: did I see his eyes glow?

sgaott
Just finished watching Stargate: The Ark of Truth (which was straight-to-DVD in the USA, but was premiered on SkyOne here in the UK before it’s availability on silver plastic Frisbees later this week).

I hear that it was shot in 16 days. I would have figured it more for a week’s worth. Honestly, it’s not even a good episode. Did wrap up the Ori story line.

But, for an Easter weekend premiere, I was really surprised they didn’t answer the key question for the Stargate Universe:
was Jesus an Ancient, or a Goa-uld?!?

And we don’t even get Ardria in a bikini.

The Map is Not The Territory

Over on StrangeMaps, there’s this image of The Inglehart-Welzel Cultural Map of the World, a map of secularity versus self expression values. Wonder how hard it is to learn Swedish?

Jericho in The Green and Pleasant Land

j

This is the UK Hallmark Channel page for this week’s episode of Jericho, a rather lame Post-Lost TV show that involves a small American town after a mysterious nuclear attack cripples the USA.

Despite my opinion of the show, I’m sure there are lots of Britons watching, rapt and addicted, waiting for the answers to the show’s mysteries to play out.

Hallmark continues to promote this mystery show, having not told their viewers that the show has been dead-end canceled in America. Fans there are understandably frustrated at the lack of closure. They’ve adopted the banner “nuts for Jericho”, and sent tons of nuts to the shows producers.. But it’s very unlikely the show will ever get ending episodes. More likely, the producers will “announce” how the unsuccessful show would have ended.

One can hate CBS for this. But think of the hate in store for Hallmark UK. They know the show is a dead end, yet they continue to promote it, giving no sign to the viewers that their investing in something that will never pay out.

Derren Brown’s USA TV Premier

Official date and time, from MovieWeb

Derren Brown Project (Title TBD; New Series - Premieres July 25, 2007 @ 10 PM) - This July, SCI FI Channel will introduce America to mentalist Derren Brown, the British sensation described as “part James Bond, part Yoda.” With numerous top-rated series and specials to his credit, Derren has astounded UK television audiences causing them to conclude that he knows your mind better than you do. SCI FI’s original U.S. produced version of the Derren Brown Project (official title TBD) will consist of 6 jaw-dropping 1-hour episodes that must be seen to be believed. Andrew O’Conner and Michael Vine will serve as executive producers for Objective Productions.

The British press has called him “mind-blowing,” “fascinating” and “a warlock.” He doesn’t claim to be a mind reader, though he can seemingly predict and control human behavior. He describes his craft as a mixture of suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship. Whatever you choose to call it, his unparalleled gift is a powerful and provocative form of entertainment.

Inexiplicable London Nights

Friday night:
1) Freud (gallery/bar in a grotty basement that makes fantastic cocktails)
2) Mon Plaseur (oldest existing French restaurant in London)
3) Saw the completely inexplicable Tiger Lillies:

4) Went to faux goth bar Garlic & Shots, and tormented others with, well, shots with garlic.

Great night out.

After you are hooked, and if you are interested in writing, you’ll want to watch the video above, and the later episodes: part II, part III, and part IV. You can’t ask for a better teacher of storytelling than Ira.

The Classist Big Brother Controversy

jadeShetty

Newsflash: the trouble in the “Celebrity” Big Brother house, which is now international news isn’t about race, it’s about class.

It’s about people who have a defiant lack of class trying to relate to people with some measure of refined class.

It’s about the sad inability of the classier party to relate to people who are from a completely separate class from her.

Ms. Shetty must appear to be a princess to people like Jade. She has some measure of poise, and in Britain, people from Jade’s class wear their lack of poise like a crown.

And Jade must appear like a racist bully to Ms. Shetty. It’s the only way she can get her head around her defiant crudity. She simple can’t relate to people from such a different class.

Jade and her mother, and the cronies they gathered in the house, are of a crude class of people (and I don’t mean that to sound as insulting as it does). They aren’t being racists. They’re just handling there inability to understand someone different incredibly crudely.

And as for bullying, I’m not even sure I know what that is. It usually requires violence. Sure, rudeness amongst school children can be a kind of violence. But amongst adults, rudeness and crudeness just makes someone an asshole, not a bully. All the people in the BB house are able adults, including Ms. Shetty. Until someone hits her, I assume she can take care of herself.

There’s another difference of class here as well. Jade is of the freakshow class of celebrities. She has no talent, and claims to have none. Jade is famous for being a fat idiot on TV.

I have not seen Ms. Shetty’s acting, but I hear that she is an actress, a person who at least has some talent-based claim to celebrity. That’s a whole other class.

I’ve got to say: this whole thing would be less likely to occur in America, where there is less general separation of classes.

And it’s interesting that there is no American equivalent to Jade that I can think of. Sincerely.

I think Jade’s lower working class status is part of what makes her a public clown. That reflects a far worse prejudice in British society than the current Big Brother “racist” fiasco, IMHO.

If a Jade-equivalent did exist in America, it would be seen as rude to laugh at someone because they are an idiot from a crude class of people. Rude enough for an outcry

BTW, these comments are made based on news reports (which I scoured in an attempt to get a clear understanding).
I would never watch a low class show like Big Brother.
